In short

Black maca root powder in a 200 g pouch gives about 40 daily servings of Peru’s scarcest maca color, roughly six weeks for one person. The resealable zip matters more than it sounds: maca draws moisture from the air, and a pouch that closes fully is what keeps the last spoonful as free-flowing as the first.

What is black maca powder?

Black maca is the darkest of the three natural color types of Lepidium meyenii, the root crop of the Peruvian high Andes. All three colors grow together in the same plot and are sorted by hand after harvest; black is consistently the smallest share, usually under 15%.

It also has the most intense taste of the three. The powder is simply the root, dried after harvest and milled.

What makes this black maca different

The size is the point

200 g at one 5 g serving a day is about six weeks. That’s long enough to make it part of your routine, and short enough that it never sits in the cupboard going flat.

A pouch that actually reseals

Zip-close doypacks push air out as they empty. Jars trap a growing headspace of humid air over the powder, which is what makes maca clump. For a powder that absorbs moisture, the pouch wins.

Single-ingredient black maca

No color blending, no bulking agent, no sweetener.

Taste profile

Roasted and malty with a cocoa-like depth and a caramel finish: the most intense of the three maca colors. It stands up to strong flavors like coffee, cacao, cinnamon and dates.

How to use it

Daily serving

5 g (1 tablespoon) a day, usually in the morning. First week: 3 g. 200 g gives about 40 servings.

Where it comes from

Peruvian black maca, grown on the Andean plateau and processed in Peru. Because each harvest yields so little black maca, it’s always the scarcest of the three colors.

Who it’s for

A good fit if you take maca on your own rather than for a household, want the rarest maca color in a manageable size, or are moving up from yellow maca.

Look elsewhere if you go through more than 200 g in six weeks: bulk sizes are far cheaper per gram. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have a thyroid condition, talk to your doctor before taking maca.

Questions

How long does 200 g of black maca last?

About 40 days at one 5 g tablespoon a day, or about 66 days at a 3 g teaspoon.

Why does maca powder clump?

Moisture. Maca pulls water out of humid air. Reseal the pouch fully, keep it away from the kettle and the stove, and never refrigerate it.

Is black maca suitable for men and women?

Yes. In the Andes black maca is eaten by everyone, and there are no gendered restrictions on any maca color. The colors differ in taste: black is the strongest, red the sweetest and yellow the mildest.

Does black maca contain caffeine?

No. It contains no caffeine or other stimulants, so you can have it at any time of day.

What’s the difference between a pouch and a jar?

A pouch collapses as it empties, so less air sits above the powder. A jar keeps a growing air gap. For a powder that absorbs moisture, the pouch keeps it in better condition for longer.

Is this maca gelatinized?

The pack doesn’t declare gelatinization, so treat it as conventionally dried and milled. If you want a powder that mixes more smoothly, choose a product that says gelatinized.

Can I mix black maca with yellow or red?

Yes. Three-color blends are common in Peru. Keep your total to the serving on the pack.
