In short

Maca powder for smoothies needs to do one thing well: disappear into the drink. This gelatinized yellow maca is milled fine and cooked before milling so it blends without grit, without clumps and without the chalky mouthfeel that raw maca leaves behind. One 5 g spoonful per glass, 50 servings per pouch.

What is maca powder for smoothies?

Any maca powder can go in a smoothie, but not all of them behave. Raw maca is starchy, and that starch is what makes it sink, clump and coat the tongue. Gelatinized maca has had its starch partly broken down by cooking before milling, so it disperses into liquid and stays dispersed.

This is yellow maca (Lepidium meyenii), the mildest of the three color types and so the easiest to blend into fruit-based drinks without the maca taking over.

What makes this maca different

A serving instruction you can follow

The label gives a straight answer: one spoonful, 5 g, in water, juice, milk or any drink. Shake and drink. No vague “add to taste.”

Protein in numbers

Reference values put maca at about 15 g of protein per 100 g. A 5 g serving adds well under a gram, so think of it as a flavor ingredient rather than a protein supplement.

Storage guidance on the pack

18–25 °C, 50–65% humidity, out of direct sunlight. Specific, and worth following: most maca that goes clumpy has simply been stored badly.

Taste profile

Mild and malty with a caramel edge. In a banana or mango smoothie it shows up as a warm background note rather than as a separate ingredient. In plain water it’s clearly present but not unpleasant.

How to use it

Daily serving

One spoonful (5 g) a day in water, juice, milk or a plant drink. Shake or blend and drink. 250 g gives 50 servings.

Where it comes from

Peruvian yellow maca, the color type that makes up roughly 60% of a typical Peruvian harvest. Maca has been grown in the central Peruvian Andes for many centuries.

Who it’s for

A good fit if you make a smoothie most mornings, want a clear 5 g serving without guesswork, or want maca that won’t dominate a fruit drink.

Look elsewhere if you mainly want maca for baking: a plain maca flour is more economical. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have a thyroid condition, talk to your doctor before taking maca.

Questions

How much maca powder do I put in a smoothie?

One 5 g spoonful, about one level tablespoon, per glass. That’s a full daily serving, so one smoothie a day is enough.

Does maca powder make smoothies gritty?

Gelatinized maca doesn’t. Raw maca can, because of its starch. If your smoothies have been gritty, the processing type is the reason.

Does maca contain protein?

Yes, about 14–15 g per 100 g in reference values. At a 5 g serving that’s under a gram of protein, so it adds flavor rather than a meaningful amount of protein.

Can I put maca in a shaker bottle without a blender?

Yes, with gelatinized maca. Add the powder, then the liquid, then shake for ten seconds. Raw maca needs a blender.

Will maca change the color of my smoothie?

Slightly: it adds a pale beige tint. In a chocolate or berry smoothie it’s invisible; in a green smoothie it dulls the color a little.

Can I prepare a maca smoothie the night before?

Yes. Maca holds up fine overnight in the fridge. Shake before drinking, as fruit fiber will separate even if the maca doesn’t.

How old is maca as a food?

Very old. Maca has been grown in the central Peruvian Andes for many centuries and is still an everyday food there.
